Children & Youths (6 - 18 years old)
- When finished reading, cannot tell the main
idea or summarize the story. May not even be able to summarize
a paragraph -- or -- may do well on short readings, but not be
able to connect larger amounts of text.
- When looking for answers to questions, needs
to be able to match some of the words in the question with those
in the story in order to find an answer.
Later on, if the question is phrased differently , it seems like
a whole new question.
- On tests, may respond to questions with answers
that seem unrelated to the question.
- Even if a question refers to something that
happened at the end a lesson or story, looks for the answer throughout
the whole story.
- May have a good memory for isolated facts,
but doesn't organize them well when retelling a story.
- Has difficulty sequencing events in a story
or lesson.
- Poor at drawing conclusions and inferences.
- Weak at distinguishing fact and opinion.
- Plot and theme are concepts that are weak
or may not be understood at all.
- Does NOT read for pleasure!

Adults (College/University, Graduate School,
Working)
- When reading, has to constantly re-read material
to get the basic facts. Frequently distracted or progressively
more sleepy as tries to read.
- In conversation, frequently has the sense
that others have a better grasp of ideas and current events --
or that a conversation has moved off without them. At these times
feels the need to maintain a low profile.
- In test situations, frequently misinterprets
the meaning of questions.
- In meetings, leaves feeling uncomfortable
that didn't pick up all the ideas expressed. Has to do follow-up
outside the meeting to collect all the ideas.
- Has difficulty being understood when making
reports and issuing longer memos (unless the ideas are edited
by someone else.)
- Training situations are uncomfortable. Frequently
the training material is presented at a pace that cannot be absorbed
or is poorly understood.
- Can follow directions when shown what to
do, but has difficulty if the directions are given orally.
- Rarely reads for pleasure.
- Very uncomfortable speaking to groups (without
major preparation) because of the difficulty in being understood.
